The John Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (located in historic East
Baltimore, near the Johns Hopkins Hospital) ministers to the whole person through
Spirit-filled worship, creative community outreach and business opportunities
designed to recruit, disciple, educate and empower loving and committed disciples for
the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are a Bible-believing church whose mission is to change lives, heal hurts and
restore hope utilizing a Five-Fold" ministry model
(Eph 4:11  -12).

John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church is part of the A.M.E. Zion denomination. It is in the
Philadelphia and Baltimore Annual Conference where the Bishop is the Rt. Rev.
Warren Brown and the Missionary Supervisor is Mrs. Aurelia Brown. Our Presiding
Elder in the Baltimore District is the Rev. Lowell A. Williams.
The progress was slow and, for a time, the local congregation ceased to function. The Rev. W. D. Hammond reopened the mission
in the home of Sister Long who resided at 1026 E. Monument Street .  Later, the congregation moved to the home of Brother John C.
Davis, where they worshipped before moving to the 500 Block of Central Avenue. A few new members joined the congregation and
Rev. Hammond organized the church with the above named officers. A Stewardess Board was added with Sister F.A. Davis,
president, Sister Laura Fisher, treasurer and Sister Lucille Leach, secretary. Sister F.A. Davis also was the first president of the
Parent Body of the Women’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society.

The second Chairman of the Trustee Board was Brother Neal Williams, who served for a number of years. He also served as a
class leader. The growth of the mission was slow, but steady. Some of the persons who helped to build John Wesley A.M.E. Zion
Church with their loyal untiring efforts were Brother Norman Winstead, long-time Chairman of Trustees and Brother Oscar, Secretary
of Trustees. Brother Arter also served as Superintendent of the Church School . Brother Walter served as Class Leader and Brother
John C. Davis served in the capacity of Church Treasurer.

In 1951, the mission ended and John Wesley A.M.E. Zion moved into its present location, 1923 Ashland Avenue , under the
leadership of the late Rev. N.G. Stevenson.      Other pastors of this historic church include the Reverends H.S. Roan, L.L.Hatchell,
Hall, March, William Jarvey, T.P. Wilson, Charles Johnson, P.A. Thompson, Robert White, David Mitchell, Leo Watkins, A.S. Ford, J.E.
Mitchell, Frederick D. Williams, Neal J. Gilchrist, Lewis M. Anthony, Arthur J. Parker, William W. Anderson, Booker Barskile and Sean
Bell.

In September 2002, Bishop Milton A. Williams, Sr. appointed the Reverend Frances Murphy Draper as the first female pastor of John
Wesley A.M.E. Zion.  Pastor Toni, as she is affectionately known, has a sincere love for God and a commitment to the flock.   In
addition to its Sunday morning worship experience and vibrant children’s church, John Wesley holds an early morning prayer
service, a weekly Bible Study and a First Friday Healing Service.
